THE GOOD
CVG’s own Dante’s Inferno review placed the game at a 9/10. Our man Mike loved the title, despite acknowledging how many parts of the game were ‘identical’ to God Of War.
Destructoid agreed with us. The site’s review also positioned Dante’s at a 9/10, with critic Nick Chester saying: ‘When it comes down to it, you’re going to get the best Dante’s Inferno experience when you let go. Let go of the comparisons [with GoW]. Let go of your contempt for what it may or may not do for and to the source material. Just let go and have fun.’
THE BAD
Eurogamer’s 6/10 score was critical of the game’s adolescent breast-obsession (CVG’s Mike wasn’t too bothered…). The site said: ‘Freud would have not so much had a field day as a four-day music festival with six stages and sponsorship by O2.’ Ouch.
1Up offered a ‘C+’ score to Dante’s. Despite applauding some areas of combat, the site said the story ended up ‘taking a backseat’ and that it ‘comes up short of creating the grand adventure that it seems to be trying for’.
THE ‘NOT-SO-AWFUL-ACTUALLY’
A reasonably decent score came from IGN. The site’s Dante’s Inferno review awarded the game 7.5/10. It said: ‘The deceptively simple combat controls and out of place challenges makes it derivative instead of a unique action experience that hasn’t been seen before.’
GameDaily went one better, with an 8/10 score. It said call EA’s 18-rated game ’shocking’, but concluded: ‘Don’t let those nitpicky issues prevent you from experiencing this imaginative and fun adventure. It’s one Hell of a good time.’
Videogamer.com agreed. The site’s Tom Orry said: ‘Visceral Games has battled against the odds to deliver an excellent hack ‘n’ slash that action junkies would be wise to take a look at.’
