What do you predict will happen in the Gaming Market?

In the Portable Gaming Market, DS is winning, and PSP sales are going under. The PSP has a 10-year planned life cycle, like how the PS1 lasted over a decade, and how the PS2 lasted 8 years, and is still going strong (PS2 games have been released, big releases too, like Final Fantasy and God of War II, and III planned for PS2). How long do you htink the PSP will last, against the DS? Will Microsoft release a Portable gaming device? Price drops? PSP 3000?
What major events do you think will occur?
What are the most likely systems to be released next? What years?
Do you think a PSP Redesign is likely at a certain year?

A gaming system life-cycle is considered from the time that it is released until it’s successor is released. Lifecycles are usually around 5 years, give or take a year. Lately it depends because of marketing strategy. Xbox 360 came out after only 4 years of the original Xbox in order to have a headstart on the PS3, a very risky strategy that although worked, did not work for the Dreamcast or Saturn.

PSP is just in a tough market. Nintendo has owned the handheld arena since the late 80′s early 90′s, and PSP tried to take that market but failed miserably. The PSP is good (I own both PSP and DS) but tailored more for the avid gamer. Nintendo on the other hand has almost perfected going after the casual ‘everyday’ person in their marketing strategy. I think DS still has a lot of life left in it and as long as it continues to fly off the shelves, I don’t think we’ll see a brand-new handhelf system from Nintendo for a while. Now the PSP, I believe, is only still holding on because of the homebrew community. I own a PSP and have over $500 worth of movies and games. But because it is not child proof, my kids often wind up breaking these flimsy cases. So I have resorted to downloading backups of my games and playing them that way. Same thing for my movies. (On the other hand I have bought 3 DS’s because my kids keep breaking off the top screen from the hinge.)

I don’t think Sony will release another redesigned PSP (not cost effective) but I don’t see them dropping support for a long time. PSP still has a marketshare that Sony can’t give up on, I just feel that 3rd party support won’t be around for much longer. Expect a few key releases per year on the PSP, but nothing much else…and forget about UMD’s, just pick them up in bargain bin’s everywhere.

I’ve heard rumors about Microsoft entering the handheld arena, but short of being able to play portable Halo/ Gears of War/ Call of Duty on the fly while on a bus or a plane I don’t think they have a chance. (By the way did you know a developer had an up and running version of Halo for the DS? Google it.)

I don’t think we’ll see any major events such as new system releases at least until 2010. The current consoles are doing a good job keeping up with the games of today, and although I’m dissappionted 360 and PS3 can’t handle Crysis I don’t see Microsoft or Sony going back to the drawing board to create a more powerful console. As far as Nintendo…they’ve struck gold with the Wii. They have no reason to put anything new out for a long time.

These are just my opinions. I have no insider secrets, hope it was helpful.
